The Youth Vote as the Deciding Factor; A Turning Point in the Zimbabwe 2023 Harmonized

In the realm of Zimbabwean politics, the nation’s youth population has traditionally been ignored and disregarded. However, as the 2023 Harmonized Elections loom, there is mounting evidence suggesting a dramatic shift. It is undeniable that the youth vote has the potential to be the deciding factor in these crucial elections, finally giving the younger generation a long-awaited voice in shaping the future of their country.

Zimbabwe has an adult population of 8,052,216 (ZimStat census report 2022) and registered voters amount to 6 619 690 which is 72% (ZEC Delimitation Report 2023). ERC AFRICA Youth Preparations to Vote in the 2023 Harmonised Elections Report notes that 71% of the youths are registered to Vote ZEC notes that 2765190 (41.7%) of the electorate are Youths. In 2008 only 8% of the youths voted, increment to 22% in 2013 and finally to 44% in 2018. Based on this data and historical trends, we can expect a projected increase in youth voter turnout of approximately 66% thus 1825025 in 2023. The ERC reports indicates that 94% of the registered voters intends to cast their vote. The data simply tells that this election will be determined by youths.

The youth in Zimbabwe have long endured marginalization and disenfranchisement within the political landscape. For decades, the elder generation has held power and maintained a stronghold on politics, leaving the youthful majority voiceless in decision-making processes. Consequently, policies and actions taken by the ruling party often fail to adequately address the struggles of young people, such as unemployment, lack of quality education, and limited access to healthcare. This trajectory has setup a different trend on youths view on elections, that have seen gradual increase in voter registration and turning out to vote.

Recent years have witnessed a surge in youth activism and political awareness. Zimbabwe’s youth are demanding a seat at the table and are no longer willing to stand idly by while their future is being decided by others. Through student movements, social media campaigns, and increased participation in civil society organizations, young Zimbabweans are demanding reform and change. This newfound enthusiasm and proactive stance indicate an emerging generation committed to actively participating in the political process. The demand for seats is not uncommon amongst all political parties. It has seen the setting up of 10 provincial seats as well as the demand for a Youth Quota.

Political parties in Zimbabwe are beginning to recognize the potential influence of the youth vote. Realizing that the younger generation holds the power to shape electoral outcomes, candidates are now actively attempting to engage with young voters, unveiling youth-focused policies and initiatives. However, it is paramount that these actions are not just empty campaign promises, but genuine efforts to address the pressing concerns of the youth population.

One crucial factor that cannot be overlooked is the role of technology in galvanizing the youth vote. With the rise of social media platforms, mobile applications, and online activism, young voters have been provided with a powerful tool to mobilize and advocate for their concerns. These platforms have allowed the younger generation to connect with like-minded individuals, share information, and mobilize support for their causes, bringing about a previously unprecedented level of political engagement.

Another significant development contributing to the youth vote as a deciding factor is the increasing access to education. With the literacy rate in Zimbabwe steadily rising, young people are becoming better equipped to evaluate policies, critically analyze candidates, and understand the implications of their votes. Education empowers the youth to make informed decisions, making them more effective agents of change.

The significance of the youth vote becoming the decisive factor in the Zimbabwe 2023 Harmonized Elections cannot be overstated. A higher youth voter turnout above my predicted 50% would undoubtedly bring about transformative change in the political landscape, opening doors for fresh ideas, innovative policies, and improved governance. If the government fails to heed the demands and aspirations of the younger generation, it risks facing massive public backlash and losing political legitimacy in the eyes of the future leaders and voters of the nation. The high intentions to vote amongst youths indicated by the YET 2019 Youth Situational Report cannot be overlooked.

As the Zimbabwe 2023 Harmonized Elections approach, there is a palpable sense of change in the air. The youth vote, which has long been silenced and overlooked, is ready to emerge as a decisive force. With increased political awareness, access to education, technological tools, and a determination to effect change, young Zimbabweans are poised to shape the future of their nation. The time has come for the voices of the youth to be heard, considered, and validated through their votes, ushering in a new era of progress, accountability, and representation.
